How to Charge an EV on Off-Peak Power

Set the vehicle or charger to begin inside the utility plan's cheapest window, while leaving enough time to reach the charge level needed before departure.

Find the real charging window

Use the schedule for your exact rate plan, season, and day type. Do not assume midnight is always cheapest. Some plans offer a midday super off-peak period because solar output is abundant, while others reserve the lowest price for overnight charging.

Account for charging duration. A car adding 40 kilowatt-hours on a 7.2 kilowatt charger needs roughly six hours after charging losses. Begin early enough that the session finishes before the peak period.

Use one scheduler

Schedule either the vehicle or the wall charger, not both. Two overlapping schedules can prevent charging or make troubleshooting confusing. Set a departure time or charging window and test it before relying on it.

If a utility requires enrollment or a dedicated meter, confirm that requirement before treating the published price as available to your home.

Estimate annual value

Multiply monthly charging energy by 12, then by the share that can move. Multiply that result by the difference between the old and new energy price. An EV using 300 kilowatt-hours each month with 90 percent movable use shifts 3,240 kilowatt-hours per year.

The result is an energy-charge estimate. It may not include taxes, fixed fees, demand charges, baseline tiers, or the cost of changing plans.

Protect the battery and your routine

Follow the vehicle maker's charging guidance and choose a daily charge limit that fits your driving. Rate optimization should not leave the car without enough range for regular trips or emergencies.
